OUAN502 - PPP2: Creative in Residence (Hannah McCann)

OUAN502 - PPP2:

Our latest creative in residence was Hannah McCann. She gave us a brief talk on how she chose unpaid work that she felt inspired by and connected with over paid work that she wouldn't have enjoyed. She was working with a closely related subject to what I wished to work with, health and emotions within animation and how animation can depict feelings towards an illness or experience in life.

She recommended a group which was after animators based around the elderly, and I was incredibly interested in this. An organisation called Inkwell were also mentioned, of which I had previous experience with during my time at hospital. I thought revisiting Inkwell might be beneficial and may give me more opportunities within working in mental health.

Hannah showed us a comic she had been working on which had a dark and macabre side to it. I really enjoyed flicking through her comic and I thought this may give me some inspiration when I come to work on my third year COP/PPP graphic novels/comics exploring mental health. She used a very unique style that I was very fond of and I was very keen that she had been working on the topics of body hair and body image. Her animations were quite shocking at first and felt quite sexual and overt but after a while you become desensitised to the subject matter and learn to take a message from her work - why is body hair and the naked body seen as such an unusual thing?

I took a lot from Hannah, more so than some of the other creatives.
