OUAN602 - PPP3: UCAS Love Learning Competition (Competition Statement)

OUAN602 - PPP3 - Engage:

UCAS Love Learning

COMPETITION STATEMENT OF INTENT

Over the four month summer break, I didn't want to make myself completely useless and relax the entire time, so I decided to actively look out for competition work that would suit my third and final year and allow me to learn some new skills, specifically to do with animation as animating is my weakest point and a skill I wanted to pursue and refine over third year.

I was sent a golden ticket in the form of an email from UCAS regarding an annual competition they'd set up called "Love Learning 2015". I was immediately interested and not just for the winning prize of £3000 (although this would've been gratefully received as rent wasn't going to pay itself!) I had just over a month to create a 30 second piece of animation with sound, a voice over and a clear message as to why I had chosen to study animation at university. Basically, it was an advertisement to future undergraduates to study this course.

I set about setting myself a time limit of a week (for the creation of the animation, bot including planning) just to see if I was really capable of hitting deadlines and giving myself some self-discipline. I really wanted to knuckle down in third year and manage to complete work to high enough standard on time (something I have struggled with the past two years). It took roughly two days to whack out a few storyboards and thumbnails and eliminate the weakest choices. I knew I would be working on a motion graphic, as I believed learning some After Effects techniques could help to inform my COP3 practical animation. Killing two birds with one stone appeared to be the most effective choice.

As you can see from this post alone, I am a bit of waffler and tend to like things to be poetic and sound lovely and pretty! This proved a challenge as fitting everything I wanted to say about animation into a 30 second piece was impossible for a motor-mouth like mine! Eventually after much editing, cutting out scenes from my storyboard, re-writing my scripts, and practicing lines, I managed to get in what I thought were the most important points. I ran it all by my family members, partner, and some animation friends to gauge their opinion and use their feedback. "You waffle too much" was the most frequent comment. I refined some more. A week in and I was ready to start animating.

What I have Done:
A thirty second animation highlighting why Animation is a fantastic course and why future undergraduates should study it.

Why:
To promote UCAS as all potential students will have to use it to enroll at a university or college, and to promote my current course and college.

Deliverables:
A thirty second piece of film (or animation) in at least 720p with free-to-use sound and no copyrighted material. You must mention the course and why you love learning on the course.
