We didn't really have much time to learn about making business cards but I attempted to create a rough mock up of what I would like to brand myself as on a business card. I first thought about how to make my cards stand out. I've seen so many people go for the basic rectangular style with their logo and information just slapped on haphazardly. I didn't want to go for this as I thought being a creative student, I had to be just that - creative.
I did make an attempt at the simple rectangular style that I mentioned above just to see what it would look like and if simplicity really was best. I liked the idea of a graphic-designy-looking card but I still wanted to aim for a unique shape or at least a card that looked relevant to my practice and interests. I liked the theme of pastel blues and possibly yellows as it gave a very neutral and soft look. I see myself as a very colourful person but I didn't want to be too loud as it might detract from the information on the card.
A basic circle shape with a mascot/illustration of my face seemed appropriate and humorous. I feel that it would stick in people's minds and they would remember me for the overly large nose, goofy grin, and glasses. I like the idea of using a caricature type logo as it's okay to make fun of your most notorious features as if they get you noticed, some attention is good attention if you are able to make light of it and turn into something positive - I use a large nose and glasses because I find that particularly funny and characteristic of myself, people remember it if I point it out!
My second attempt in Illustrator was something cute and fun - a basic pencil shape in that simple, graphic style I liked from the first one. I planned to stick my face on the back along with some basic info and links to my social networking sites. I downloaded a handy pack of social network logos from eStudio to help me achieve a clean, crisp look rather than stealing a blurry logo off Google, These looked more professional.
I prefer the pencil design as it instantly makes people think 'art', 'fun', and 'cheerful'. The bright colours and blocky shapes are easy on the eyes and it delivers exactly what it's meant to - a snappy introduction to myself! I used eStudio's '100 business card designs' for inspiration and I particularly liked ones that were shaped like cameras and pieces of equipment relating to a practice. I also remember Luca's laser cut cards from last year featuring a QR code to scan with a mobile device. I thought they were fantastic! I'd like my cards to have some other purpose or gimmick besides just being pretty to look at.
