OUAN502 - PPP2: Avenged Sevenfold - A Little Piece of Heaven (NSFW)

OUAN502 - PPP2:

Now, I understand that PPP is there to allow us to express views on animation we like, why we like it and so forth, but in this instance I'd like to talk about this music video that I had a watched a good few years ago which really didn't tickle my fancy...

Avenged Sevenfold, a favourite band of mine for many, many years now, sought out to create an animated music video for one of their most popular songs - A Little Piece of Heaven. The video isn't really appropriate, nor are the lyrics so I wouldn't suggest watching this if easily offended by little issues such as necrophilia.

Anyway, I heavily disliked the style of animation as I expected something more hand-drawn "Gorrilaz" style rather than a really bad take off Disney feel to it. In fact, I'm no Picasso or a fantastic animator, but I felt as though I was watching a slideshow of really flat images and moving backgrounds just stuffed together. I completely understand that the song is a whopping eight minutes long and that the animator must've seen this as a rather tedious job, however it doesn't really look like much effort went into this as even the transitions between scenes looks like something you'd find on PowerPoint...

I do feel that the backgrounds didn't really match the style of the characters in this animation as the backgrounds look really nicely painted and a fair bit of effort must have gone into them, however the characters look very flat, cartoony and have an "Adobe Flash" look about them with that very distinct line art and unshaded colour scheme. The character animation isn't smooth, featuring quite possibly one of the worst head turns, and to be honest I'm not sure whether it was intentional but it looks as if it was inspired by Scooby Doo with the painted backgrounds and contrasting characters. Sadly, I feel like it is inconsistent and it doesn't really work for me. However it hasn't changed my love for the band!
