OUAN402 - PPP - Absorb: Bayonetta Concept Art

OUAN402 - PPP:

Speaking to one of the DFGA third years for several hours about what games we liked and why, Bayonetta popped up in conversation and instantly sparked a huge debate about what features we liked and didn't like - there weren't many dislikes!

One topic was the concept art of Bayonetta herself and what would happen if she looked different. After searching for concept art from the game itself, we found many beautiful images of what Bayonetta could have looked like. This is how she currently looks in-game. (See above). This was taken from PlatinumGames on Tumblr.

We both agreed that this version of Bayonetta is successful as although she is female and most male gamers would like to see flesh, she does not have to show off her cleavage or stomach to be attractive and achieve the status of "sexy". In fact, most of her body is completely covered which leaves more to the imagination and makes you focus more on the gameplay instead of what her boobs actually look like!

Below are some other concept images of what she could've looked like. The styles of art I discovered ranged from cowboy, steampunk and art nouveau all the way to america comic style, mecha/robot and fantasy mage/cleric.

I think in terms of how females are portrayed according to Bayonetta, more clothing is less and makes a successful character. Her spunky stances and attitude make up for this and the idea of glasses add to her sexiness as personality and the idea of intelligence and modesty in clothing do so too. She is an incredibly beautiful and well-designed character. I would love to create work like this in the future.
