OUAN602 - PPP3: Possible Career Paths

OUAN602 - PPP3:

Possible Career Paths

After much thought, I actually wondered whether or not teaching would be an appropriate route for me to explore as my previous volunteering as a classroom assistant seemed to go really well. I found that managing difficult students was down to a particular art - shouting and bawling at students gets you nowhere and doesn't gain any mutual respect (it's also quite patronising and comes off as an easy target for more havoc), so being strict whilst trying to keep a sense of humour and personality goes a long way in a classroom!

Getting in touch with former teachers was helpful as they thought I had the right personality and enthusiasm to be part of a teaching environment. I also thought my TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) qualification would help me in other areas, such as teaching abroad whilst travelling the world (kill two birds with one stone!).

Firstly I would need to look into what kind of funding was available for teaching courses either in Art or English (English language was my second choice of degree when coming to university so would in some way wish to pursue that). To do this, I asked around to see if there were any information events in college. Later, I was notified by my tutors about Career Track Tuesdays, evenings dedicated to finding work after college and how to go about it.

I found the teaching session incredibly helpful as it answered all of my questions.Though I was disappointed by the outcome, I now know that teaching Art & Design or anything in that field was not an option unless I was stinking rich or the government miraculously had a change of heart regarding funding...

I will search further into what paths would be best for me...
